How to Mount Gemstone Rings

Gemstones are treasured gifts from the earth that come in a rainbow-like spectrum of hues and a broad assortment of shapes and sizes. Emeralds, sapphires, rubies, and diamonds are just some of the many gemstones with which jewelry wearers love to adorn themselves. Gemstones are among the most popular and desirable components of jewelry. They are worn as pendants, as earrings, as bracelets, and as rings. While most fine jewelry retailers offer a variety of set and mounted gemstone rings for sale, it is possible to mount your own gemstone ring. All you need are the right tools and supplies.

Step 1

Measure the size of each gemstone you intend to mount on a ring. Determine the size of the gemstones' width, length, and depth in millimeters using a ruler. Note that basket settings---metal settings with prongs that hold gemstones secure---are categorized according to their size in millimeters.

Step 2

Identify the cut or cuts of the gemstones you plan to mount. Remember that gemstone cuts include, but are not limited to, emerald, princess, round, pear, cushion, and rose. Know the cut of the gemstones so you can choose basket settings in the right shape as well as the proper size.

Step 3

Choose an individual basket setting for each gemstone you wish to mount. Select basket settings that correspond to the size and cut of each gemstone. Find basket settings at online jewelry supply vendors, such as firemountaingems.com or riogrande.com, or have a jeweler order them. Purchase basket settings in the same type of metal as your ring; for example, choose a platinum basket setting to go with a platinum ring.

Step 4

Position the individual gemstones in their basket settings with their fronts facing upward toward the ceiling. Bend the tiny metal prongs of the basket settings down over the gemstones using prong-closing pliers. Make sure the prongs are pressed snugly against the gemstones to hold them in place.

Step 5

Apply soldering flux---which enables solder to flow easily and adhere to metal--- to the base of the basket setting and the top of the ring where you want to mount the setting. Dab on the flux with a paintbrush.

Step 6

Position a bit of solder over the place where the basket setting meets the ring. Apply flux to the solder. Remember to use solder that is appropriate for the type of metal your ring and basket setting are made of; for example, you need silver solder for a silver ring and setting.

Step 7

Heat the solder with a butane torch until it melts into place. Turn off the torch. Allow the solder to solidify.
